Meet the counsellor
I’m Jayla, the counsellor behind Yarrow Counselling.
I have always been drawn to people—their stories, emotions, and the connections that shape their lives. This curiosity led me to pursue a degree in secondary education in the humanities, eventually teaching high school in Alberta and BC. During that time, I found that my most meaningful moments weren’t about academics, but about the conversations where students felt safe enough to share their struggles. Those moments sparked a desire to go back to school to complete a master’s degree in clinical counselling, deepening my understanding of trauma, healing, and human resilience.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working in crisis response, supporting children, teenagers, and parents in navigating individual and family dynamics, and helping adults work through childhood trauma and histories of abuse and violence. No matter who I’m working with, I aim to walk alongside them, bringing warmth, curiosity, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story.
Outside the office, you’ll find me exploring the Kootenays with my dog, connecting with my community over food and games, or introverting in my garden or with a good book.

My approach is client-centered, honouring the wisdom and strength you bring to the process. I believe every person is unique, resilient, and capable of growth.
As a trauma-informed, integrative counsellor, I understand everyone has unique needs and so I tailor my approach to fit you.
With a systemic and somatic perspective, I consider both your individual experiences and the broader social factors shaping your life. Together, we’ll explore your story—what it is now and how it can evolve— while integrating somatic practices to engage the body as an active part of healing.

Why Yarrow Counselling?
Yarrow was the first plant I learned was medicine as a child, and it has stayed with me ever since.
Across cultures and generations, yarrow has symbolized healing, from Greek mythology with Achilles carrying it to tend the physical wounds of his soldiers to Irish tradition using it in relation to love and long lasting relationships. Yarrow also represents the deeper, slower healing of the self: teaching that true healing of deep wounds requires patience and protection. It reminds us to nurture our hurt parts with care, allowing the process to unfold without rushing.
To me, yarrow embodies lifelong, holistic healing and a connection to both community and place. It grows abundantly across cultures yet thrives resiliently in my own backyard, even in harsh conditions.
At Yarrow Counselling, I aim to cultivate what yarrow represents—deep, self-paced healing; love and connection, both internal and external; developing boundaries; and the resilience to grow even in difficult conditions.
